Cardiac Surgery Treatment Options

There are a variety of surgical treatment options available to cardiac patients today, including the extremely accurate and minimally invasive daVinci Robotic Surgical System.

Offering patients smaller incisions – and less unattractive scarring – as well as faster recovery, Dr. Balaram uses this effective, less invasive surgical option for routine as well as highly-complex cardiothoracic procedures, including the treatment of:
  • Coronary artery disease. Dr. Balaram performs coronary bypass surgery using robotic surgery in certain selected cases. She also employs internal mammary artery grafts for the bypass conduits, which show lower long-term disease recurrence rates when compared to vein grafts, especially among patients with diabetes.

  • Thoracic aortic aneurysms, with the option of using an open or minimally invasive stent approach to repair abnormally enlarged arteries.

  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The division of cardiothoracic surgery at SLR is one of only a handful of recognized centers in the United States that routinely perform surgery for this condition, which causes the heart muscle to thicken and impede normal function.

  • Deficient Heart Valves and atrial septal defects. Using a minimally invasive approach, Dr. Balaram performs these highly-delicate procedures with greater accuracy and small incisions.

  • Congestive heart failure. Dr. Balaram uses robotic surgery to install delicate leads connected to pacemakers used in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT), an important breakthrough in treating patients with congestive heart failure.

  • Atrial Fibrillation. Using minimally invasive incisions, Dr. Balaram is able to provide successful treatment for chronic atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that affects millions of Americans.

Is minimally invasive cardiac surgery right for you – or someone you know? Dr. Balaram has the experience and expertise to help you decide. To schedule an appointment for a cardiac surgery consult with Dr. Sandhya Balaram, please call 212-523-2798.
