Center for Parkinson's Disease
The Center for Parkinson's Disease operates at Beth Israel's Petrie Division and at the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center. The National Parkinson's Foundation has designated the Parkinson's Center as a Clinical Center of Excellence. Under the leadership of Susan B. Bressman, MD, Chairman of Beth Israel's Alan and Barbara Mirken Department of Neurology, the Center serves over 2,000 patients with Parkinson's Disease and related disorders each year. Services include state-of-the art clinical care; occupational, speech, and physical therapy; support groups for patients and their families; complementary and alternative medicine; and community education. The Center has a dedicated research laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is currently running several clinical trials of new new drugs for patients in all stages of the disease.

The Epilepsy Program
Directed by Jeffrey Cohen, MD, PhD and Steven M. Wolf, MD, the Epilepsy Program serves hundreds of children and adults each year in a family-friendly atmosphere. Services include special MRIs and continuous video and electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring to determine the part of the brain responsible for seizures. Surgical procedures include the implantation of Vagal Nerve Stimulators -- sometimes called "pacemakers for the brain" -- that can control the most severe seizures, incisions into the brain to wall off areas that generate seizures from the rest of the brain, and resection of seizure foci within the brain.

The Yarmon Stroke Center
The Yarmon Stroke Center offers the highest quality care for stroke patients. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of disability in the adult population. Irene Boniece, MD coordinates a comprehensive approach to treatment and diagnosis of patients in the acute phase of a stroke, as well as intensive programs dedicated to stroke prevention through screening and education.

Beth Israel ALS Center
The Beth Israel ALS Center, located at the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center, is dedicated to helping patients with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) live more productively and independently. The Center is co-sponsored by the ALS Association’s Greater New York Chapter and is the only such center in New York City certified by the ALS Association. Free transportation is available for those who need it.

The Hyman-Newman Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN)
Directed by Alejandro Berenstein, MD, the Hyman-Newman Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN) is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary center for the diagnosis and treatment of adults and children afflicted with neurological and neurovascular disorders. The INN is dedicated to delivering humanistic health care in one of the most technologically sophisticated fields. This vision is carried out by a team of world-class medical and surgical specialists and dedicated support staff whose expertise includes treatment of brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, and stroke. The standard of care offered by the INN attracts patients -- infants, adolescents, and adults -- from across the country and around the world.

The Save One Child Program
The Save One Child Program underwrites hospitalization and supportive services for young patients who are uninsured or underinsured. The program helps ensure that children who come to the INN receive full medical attention and personalized care, regardless of financial circumstances.

Center for Endovascular Surgery & The Vascular Biology Research Program
The Center for Endovascular Surgery, led by INN Director Alejandro Berenstein, MD, employs the latest technological advances in the field of angiography (the imaging of the vascular system to identify blockages) and minimally invasive endovascular surgery. The Center treats conditions related to the vascular systems of the brain, head, face, spine, and spinal cord, including strokes, aneurysms, vascular tumors, vascular malformations, birthmarks, and other vascular abnormalities. The Vascular Biology Research Program is co-directed by Dr. Berenstein and Michael F. Silane, MD. The program’s laboratory, located at St. Luke's Hospital, includes a full operating room with a fluoroscopic facility in which new stents, coils and other devices, and the body's reaction to them, are being tested.

The Vascular and Birthmarks Institute (VBI) of New York
Co-directed by Milton Waner, MD, and INN Director Alejandro Berenstein, MD, the VBI is dedicated to the treatment of children with birthmarks and vascular malformations. These internationally renowned physicians are pioneers in the development of new treatments for these often life-threatening or extremely disfiguring conditions. Their work, and that of their colleagues, is providing new hope for patients and their families.

Headache Institute
The Headache Institute, located at Roosevelt Hospital, is led by Larry Newman, MD and offers the services and expertise of a distinguished multidisciplinary medical team. Among the Institute's services are adult and pediatric neurology, pain management, inpatient and emergency treatment, and opportunities to participate in research studies of promising therapies. The Institute also offers patient and family support groups, as well as complementary medicine approaches such as biofeedback, stress management, and hypnosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Research and Treatment Center
The Multiple Sclerosis Research and Treatment Center at Roosevelt Hospital is a world-class research center and offers comprehensive treatment programs individually tailored to each patient. The Center staff includes distinguished practitioners in an array of related specialties to treat the varied symptoms of MS. Featuring a complete rehabilitation gymnasium, the Center is one of only eight sites in the country selected by a leading medical technology company for use as a clinical training center for specialists working in spasticity management.
The Center's research includes both clinical trials and basic research investigating causes, mechanisms of progression, and potential interventions to help repair neurological damage. Investigators are using leading-edge techniques such as molecular biology, work with stem cells, and a genetic research component to accelerate their search for new treatments and a possible cure.

Center for Cranial Base Surgery
Under the leadership of Chandranath Sen, M.D., the Center for Cranial Base Surgery at Roosevelt Hospital represents a new era in the treatment of complex tumors, such as tumors at the skull base or beneath the nose or eyes. The Center's team focuses on providing superb care that aids in restoring quality of life by returning function and facial aesthetics, utilizing such state-of-the-art techniques as minimally invasive surgery and tissue engineering to produce implants for bone and soft tissue restoration.

The Stroke Center at Long Island College Hospital
The Stroke Center at Long Island College Hospital is one of the New York metropolitan area's leading centers for the diagnosis and management of acute stroke. Toby Gropen, MD, chairman of neurology at LICH, and his team of stroke specialists apply a full array of vascular imaging and other testing systems to evaluate and diagnose stroke patients. The Center's unit is staffed by nurses with special expertise in preventing the complications of stroke and helping patients recover through physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After discharge, the Center offers programs for the aggressive management of stroke risk factors to help patients prevent future strokes.
