The Continuum Heart Institute is the only fully integrated cardiac care
system in New York City, linking together the cardiology and cardiac surgery
services of Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals,
and Long Island College Hospital. We have assembled outstanding physicians
and the most advanced technology to bring the very best comprehensive and
compassionate care to all those who turn to us for the health of their heart
-- and their life.

Arrhythmia Service
To advance the arrhythmia field and raise awareness of the latest, lifesaving
treatments, St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals will establish an Arrhythmia
Institute that will consolidate the Arrhythmia Service’s physical plant
in one state-of-the-art facility and serve as a think tank for advanced arrhythmia
care, training and research. Led by Jonathan
Steinberg, MD, it will be the first such center in the United States.
The Institute’s mission and purpose will be to provide outstanding arrhythmia
care, offer physician and patient education and train tomorrow’s specialists,
while conducting ongoing research to clarify the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias
and develop improved methods for diagnosis and treatment.

Cardiac Surgery
The techniques and technology available to cardiac surgeons today to correct,
repair, or reverse a cardiovascular problem are extraordinary. Founded in
1954, our Cardiac Surgery program is the oldest in New York State and has
developed an outstanding roster of cardiothoracic surgeons. We are at the
leading edge in the development of new procedures and devices that are dramatically
improving treatment for patients with heart disease. The Division of Cardiothoracic
Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center, under the direction of Robert
Tranbaugh, M.D., and the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Luke's
and Roosevelt, under the direction of Daniel
Swistel, MD, are both recognized by the New York State Department of Health
as having some of the lowest mortality rates of any New York City hospitals
and are consistently ranked among the top programs in New York State. Your
gift will help us to continue providing exceptional health care.

Cardiovascular Research
Cardiovascular Research is an important focus of the Heart Institute. Our
physicians conduct ongoing studies of the cardiovascular system to better
understand how to prevent heart disease, develop improved methods of treatment,
and evaluate outcomes of treatment. Projects include studies in the use of
radiated stents that emit low doses of radiation to prevent restonosis (recurrence
of a narrowing of one of the cardiac valves) and several studies investigating
gene therapy in heart disease.

Heart Failure Program
Continuum's innovative Heart Failure Program, directed by Alan
L. Gass, MD, at Beth Israel, and Marrick
L. Kukin, MD, at St. Luke's and Roosevelt, is dedicated to enhancing quality
of life and reducing mortality for heart failure patients. While traditional
heart failure care focuses on patients with end-stage heart failure, Continuum's
program serves patients with left ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart
failure who are often asymptomatic but are at high risk for this fatal disease.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Program at Roosevelt
The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program, directed by Mark
Sherrid, MD, is the only program in the tri-state area which specializes
in evaluation, treatment, and research of this condition -- a hereditary disease
characterized by thickening of the heart and is the leading cause of sudden
cardiac death among young athletes.

Cardiovascular
Disease Prevention Program
St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals have established one of the first
comprehensive cardiovascular disease prevention programs in New York City.
This specialized service, led by Dr.
Merle Myerson, is dedicated to reducing patients’ risk of developing
cardiovascular disease including heart attacks and stroke and to help manage
progression of existing disease. Through cholesterol and full lipid profile
testing and treatment, management of high blood pressure, smoking cessation,
nutrition evaluation, weight loss program, physical fitness assessment and
exercise prescription, patients will be empowered to make better lifestyle
choices, minimize risk factors and improve their overall quality of life.
Patients can make their own appointments or be referred through their other
health care providers. We offer one-time consultations as well as ongoing
treatment.
Center for Cardiac and
Pulmonary Health at Beth Israel
A full complement of cardiac rehabilitation services for both preventive care
and post-operative therapy are provided by the Center for Cardiac and Pulmonary
Health. Consistent with the Heart Institute's interdisciplinary approach,
many of these services are provided in collaboration with the Department of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The center provides Phase II and III
Cardiac Rehab, nutritional counseling, group support, exercise programs and
complementary therapies.

Cardiovascular Intervention
Program
The Cardiovascular Intervention program offers the full spectrum of coronary
angiography and interventional procedures from diagnostic evaluation to the
treatment of coronary disease. With state-of-the-art catheterization and electrophysiology
laboratories, we offer the most advanced technology available in the field.
Under the leadership of John
Fox , MD, at Beth Israel, and Mun
K. Hong, MD, at St. Luke's and Roosevelt, the program offers procedures
such as complex catheterization, percutaneous coronary stenting, coronary
brachytherapy, myocardial revascularization, coronary atherectomy, patent
foramen ovale closure procedures and valvuloplasty.

The Inherited Cardiac
Disease Center
Directed by Steven
Evans, MD, at Beth Israel, the Center focuses on treating individuals
and families affected by genetic conditions, such as Brugada syndrome and
Long QT syndrome that can produce arrhythmias, which may result in sudden
cardiac death. The Center has full clinical and diagnostic capabilities and
collaborates closely with other clinical divisions in bringing a full range
of services to patients. It also collaborates on research efforts with multiple
academic and clinical centers.

Continuum Women's Cardiac
Care Network
Dedicated to preventing and treating heart disease in women -- their number
one killer in America -- the Network consists of female cardiologists at four
Continuum hospitals with a wide range of expertise that includes preventive
cardiac care, heart failure management, arrhythmia treatments, and interventional
cardiology. These physicians are well-versed in issues of special concern
to women, such as heart disease and hormone replacement therapy, heart disease
and pregnancy, and the management of certain arrhythmias that are common among
women. The Network provides women with easy access to a wide range of outstanding
cardiac services through one central access point.

Continuum Minority Outreach
Initiative to Expand Access to Cardiac
The Heart Institute is dedicated to decreasing racial disparities in cardiac
treatment and outcomes by reaching out to members of minority communities
that suffer disproportionately from heart and related disease, and providing
access to quality care. This project will offer outreach, education and patient/family
support to patients most at risk for cardiac disease, which will be implemented
initially at Long Island College Hospital.
